We are GO!! SiliconDirect goes live ... 13/6/2011
Posted by Liam O'Keeffe

We have just launched www.silicondirect.co.nz, our new On-line IT store that you can quickly and easily use to order IT products on-line.

Our Aim with Silicon direct was to build a site that has business customers in mind - simple and quick to navigate, a concise list of quality, real-world products (rather that 800 different web-cams for example) that focuses on the types of items businesses typically require. Of course we’ve tried to make it usable and easy to use for retail customers as well.

We will be providing plenty of value-adds through the site, some great specials & promotions, and we will almost always give away something for free (because everyone loves free stuff!)

You may notice that some of the pricing on some items is lower than what you may have paid for the same items in the past. That’s because with this new model of selling we’re able to lower our sales overhead, and subsequently pass these savings onto you by lowering our margin.

You may also notice that we haven’t included Server or Storage products on this site – that’s because we feel that due to the number of variables and ever changing nature of these products, we believe its best to continue to deal with these requirements on an individual basis, just like we’ve always done.

To kick things off, we’re giving away an 8GB USB Drive with every order over $50. You can also go into the draw to win one of 3 Apple iPod Nanos just by signing up to our mailing list before the end of the month, and every laptop sold comes with a free Intel Wireless Mouse. Oh - and in typical Silicon fashion, every order always ships with a Chunky bar of Whittaker’s Milk Chocolate!

So add it to your favourites, tell as many friends and work colleagues about it as you can , and go check it out for yourself.

Of course as with anything brand new, there’s bound to be a few areas for improvement – so if you see anything you think could be better,  or any bugs, please let us know – we’d love to hear your feedback on anything we can do to improve the site.  We will steadily be adding products and categories as we see fit, so if there is anything you’d like to see added, please let us know.

And of course if you’d prefer to just carry on doing business the good old fashion way (ie over the phone or via email) you’re more than welcome - it’s still business as usual.

Thanks very much, and happy browsing!

Silicons commitment to the Environment has paid dividends... 15/4/2011

Since Silicon has attained the ISO14001 Certification we have been monitoring our environment savings to gage if savings have been made. Just by vigilantly turning off lights, having timers on lights in areas where use is sporadic, all staff members turning off their monitors and computers at night we have saved over $3000 in electricity cost in the last year. More initatives of savings are being looked at to see if we can decrease our electricity useage even further.

Savings have also been made with managing our rubbish disposal more closely. By switching to pick ups only when the rubbish bin is full rather than just a weekly pick up, in conjunction with recycling packaging where able we have reduced our general expenses substantially.

So not only is being Environmentally aware good for the environment and business it is also great for the bottom line!

Silicon at Intel Solutions Summit for 2010 ... 10/5/2010
Posted by Liam O'Keeffe

We have just returned from the 2010 Intel Solutions Summit for Intel Channel partner Premier Members in Macau. It was pleasing to see some excellent growth results from the APAC channel segment (in which Silicon operates) and we continue to gain market share against the Multinational segment, especially in the server and storage space. Intel's new Core processors (Core i3, i5 and i7) was obviously a big focus, and these processors do offer many benefits in the desktop space. Other products showcased were the New Intel 5600 series Xeon processors which are currently available in all Silicon servers, a host of desktop platforms, and some interesting new retail products. Macau was certainly an eye opener, as the Las Vegas of the East, we did well to stay away from the blackjack tables! You can view more detailed information on the 2010 range of Core processors and the Intel 5600 series Xeon processors through the following links:

Seagates launch for their Constellation Range of Hard Drives has been pushed back slightly, with a due date now hovering around the February 2010  mark.  The Constellation range targets enterprise class applications,  suitable in products such as the Silicon McKay Creek SAN, and Silicon Copper Mountain Server range. The feature a SAS interface but use SATA drive technology internally, with throughput of up to  6-Gb/s, and capacity up to 2TB.  Data security and lower power consumption are also features which should see this range enjoy a lot of popularity when it is finally released!  Check back in February for an update on the launch date! As usual, Silicon will have drives available for testing.
